PROJECT THIEF GARRETT COSTUME First of all, it was my most complicated and costliest costume ever. Often I was asked, how to do a costume like this, so here I will give you a short insight into my approach to this project: 1. Brainstorming of the idea for the costume (and the question if I REALLY want to do this timeconsuming project, coz the most work I have to do myself) 2. Conception of the idea (changes from day to day) Includes: Drawing the costume in front, back and profile with all the datails like seams, rivets, weapons, accessoires etc. (many long evenings of drawing, get rid of ideas, doing new ones) The artbook of "Thief" helped a lot!!! 3. Planning the amount of costs for fabrics, leather, sewing threads, tools, paper, weapons, rivets, buttons, eyelets, leather glue etc. 4. Finding out, where to buy all the things (again many long evenings of searching the net, finding a blacksmith, a shoemaker, a saddler, a suitable bow with arrows, lockpicks and what else I need 5. Ordering all the things and waiting for the next fabric market in town (I went there thinking over all the time if I really calculated enough fabric for my project) H)y tools of the trade 6. Creation of the made to masure patterns (in this case over 150 pieces) on paper and cutting out (2 days of work - I needed my whole living room for all pieces) 7. Sewing a dummy with untreated cotton and pleather and trying it on, change a bit here and there, try it on again, then the same procedure again and again until I was satisfied with the fitting ... I don't know how long I stood before the mirror with needles here and there) Leather patterns for robe, trousers, armor, quiver belts, arm protection, hood, doal etc. 8. Driving to a friend two times (he is a professional saddler) and using his leather sewing machine to sew all the loose pieces to an unified whole. I needed 1 week every day 8-10 hours. I also had to glue all seams together and hammer them down one by one) 9. Sewing by hand for the detail stitches, pimping up the whole costume with eyelets, rivets and cords, ropes, patting the leather armor etc. (again a lot of evenings) (lad linen doal (Garrett loots so awesome with it ;-) Shaping the shoulder Shoulder stitches for the detailswith cords Grooving the leather belts for the stitches I •' J у J. /1 1 WtJV 4 T- Ш I F mlJL \ .-.Л ^V L ~~ / "ЯР 1 vM A big THANKS goes to my friend Samuel Kiimmel who made the photo shooting with me. He never did cosplay photos before and he captured the atmosphere of “Thief’ perfectly. I also want to thank Patrick Redekop for the use of his leather sewing machine and his kind help. I am just a cosplayer in the broadest sense, I more tend to realistic costumes with real weapons to feel as badass as one actor feels when he has the chance to be a Robin Hood, a gladiator, a musketeer or another heroic person. I can wear a costume more often when I go to a mediveal fantasy spectaculum, plus, I can wear real weapons. For all those who want to create a costume like this, note: It is very difficult and not that easy to do a costume like this. You have pull yourself together, you have to be patient and need to have a feeling for shape, fabric, practical understanding. Last but not least, the realisation - it is a tricky one (construction of patterns and the measurement, sewing the leather, etc.). I needed six months of work from the idea to the final result, what is a long time (beside work, friends, my hubby: Thank you all that you were able to spare me). So if you are up to do such a costume, be aware of the fact that it is indeed a lot of work. But go for it, it is worth the whole effort!
