Немного общей информации о драконах, предложено Van Korben! Многое из этого уже было в других местах, но мне пришла задача сделать реф-лист для драконов в целом, так что вот куча информации, собранная в одном месте. Часть из этого - новая. 31 августа состоится первое заседание суда по делу Элизабет Холмс

Холмс - печально известная основатель и генеральный директор стартапа Theranos. Революция, которую она намеревалась совершить в анализах крови, сравнима по масштабам только с грандиозным фейлом, постигшим в итоге стартап.

Когда-то самая известная молодая селф-мейд миллиардерша в мире, 37-летняя Элизабет Холмс теперь обвиняется в десяти случаях мошенничества и двух случаях сговора с целью мошенничества. Ей грозит до 20 лет тюрьмы.

История Холмс привлекла очень много внимания и уже легла в основу книги-расследования, документального фильма, а также находящихся в разработке сериала и фильма.

В 19 лет Холмс ушла из Стэнфорда и основала Теранос с целью создать портативное устройство, которое могло бы по одной крохотной капле крови сделать анализ на сотни заболеваний. Вдохновляясь продуктами Эппл, Холмс переманила оттуда дизайнеров для создания внешнего вида машины под названием Эдисон.

Элизабет без устали раздавала интервью и охмуряла инвесторов. Многие известные личности очень хорошо вложились в стартап. 

Еще до готовности Эдисона к релизу Холмс заявляла, что он будет способен распознавать сотни  смертельных заболеваний на самых ранних стадиях, так что "ни с кем не придется прощаться слишком рано"

Когда аппараты начали поставляться в крупнейшую сеть аптек Wallgreen stores, чтобы посетители могли ими пользоваться, и появились планы использования Эдисона военными прямо во время боевых действий на поле боя, стоимость компании достигла 9 миллиардов, а Холмс украсила обложки Fortune, Bloomberg, Forbes и других, а журнал Тайм включил ее в сотню самых влиятельных людей.

В то же время у самих аппаратов Эдисон были большие проблемы - они давали неверные результаты анализов. Многие пациенты получили результаты, которые указывали на наличие у них серьезных проблем: рак, ВИЧ, выкидыши...

Чтобы хоть как-то скрыть такие косяки, Теранос заказывали анализ образцов у сторонних лабораторий. Холмс тиранила своих подчиненных, угрожала всем, кто решится открыть рот, штаб-кватиру компании постоянно патрулировали ее адвокаты. Но ничего не помогло, все всплыло наружу, было запущено расследование, и Элизабет Холмс повторила свой головокружительный взлет, только в обратную сторону.

Пока трудно сказать, что именно и на каком этапе пошло не так. Лично я верю, что по крайней мере вначале Холмс сама верила в то, что делала. И, видимо, это будет одной из линий ее защиты - только будут настаивать, что верила до самого конца.

Вообще, очаровательно шизанутая мадам. Один видок этих почти не мигающими глаз чего стоит. 

Она фанатично следовала дресс-коду своего кумира Джобса. Она, по всей видимости, всегда сознательно занижала свой голос, т. к. считала, что так производит лучшее впечатление на слушателей. Можете сами послушать любое ее интервью. Звучит и правда оче странно.

Возможно, Холмс довела до самоубийства одного из своих главных ученых, который принял горсть обезболивающих незадолго до встречи с ней.

Еще одной линией защиты, по слухам, может стать психическое заболевание в результате какой-то там травмы.

Суд должен продлиться три месяца. Проходить все будет в Сан-Хосе, в Калифорнии.

Запуск нового комикса и статус "The Crawling City"

Studio FOW возвращается

В честь своего десятилетия, Sudio FOW выпустила ролик, в котором анонсировала несколько новых фильмов и заявила о своем возвращении в лоно киноиндустрии.

Кроме этого, они также выложили крупное обращение на своем дискорд-сервере следующего содержания:

Dear Fowlings,Well, here are we. On this day ten years ago, two Doritos-encrusted neckbeards got up from their Source Filmmaker induced stupor, wiped the orange dust off their keyboards, and decided it was a good idea to release Lara in Trouble upon the unsuspecting world. 

We toiled for probably around two months on that goddamn movie, trying to figure out how to make one broken thing interact with yet another broken thing inside a very broken attic environment. Nothing really worked as it should, everything seemed held together by jank and illusions. So it was with a mix of great trepidation (and a desire to be free of GabeN’s hell) that we decided that it was finally fit for release. 

It was not, but you guys liked it anyway. 

As yagskie and I finally put on our underwear and started scrolling through the comments we realized that there was a real hunger and demand for longer-form content. We knew that short, voice-less loops are no longer gonna cut it. And StudioFOW was born. 

Ten years on, we have been through some shit, some good, some bad, but at the end of the day we’ve always kept one foot moving forward thanks to your support. 

This has been the most incredible of journeys, and I could not be more thankful to all of you for allowing us to undertake it. The fact that the core team is still together here after ten years in such a crazy industry is a testament to how committed we are to delivering content for you guys. 

2024 is a crossroads moment for us as a studio. As we finish our animation duties on Subverse (very soon), we have to decide what to do next with our careers. There’s a lot of new tech on the market, a lot of exciting opportunities. However, defiling waifus and making them ahegao in sheer ecstasy will always be our true calling. As such, the idle animators will slowly trickle back into creating film content. How much of it, and what kind of film content, will depend on YOU all. We have set up a Fansly dedicated to filmmaking as well as Throne for some more experimental content. You can support the studio through these platforms and get production going RIGHT NOW!

We feel the same buzz and energy (even more so) now than in 2014, and with being out of the scene for a few years we cannot wait to get creative again and show ya’ll what we can still do. 

To our collaborators/contributors – There are too many to list throughout these 10 years but everyone we’ve worked with, or added something to the movies, thank you for your contributions. I really want to thank people individually (maybe in a separate post) since this message is already too long and sappy 

To the discord community – enjoy the celebrations! We’d love to hear your FOW anecdotes throughout the week. Favorite movie moments, scenes etc. I am sucker for stories about people meeting through online communities, and we have one of the best on the Internet, so if you have any juicy meetup stories please let me know!

Lake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe is 1645 ft deep, and the second deepest lake in the United States. It’s formed over a fault line, not a volcanic crater, but it’s way up in the mountains at 6,000 feet. Because it’s pretty deep, if there was an earthquake on the fault under the lake, they figure that there might be a 20ft tsunami from it. This would mess up a lot of very wealthy people’s second vacation homes. Wikipedia hints that California and Nevada briefly went to war against each other in 1864 over this territory but doesn’t give any satisfactory account. 

It’s a tourist trap for the SF Bay Area, and people down here love to put bumper stickers on their cars that say ‘keep Tahoe Blue’. I would like to assume this is related to some corporate effort to rename Tahoe’s famous Emerald Bay to ‘Sapphire Bay’, but the real meaning, particularly among its adherents, appears to be extremely vague. I asked someone about this once, and after some hemming and hawing they said that the whole exercise was simply to ‘raise awareness’ rather than do any specific thing to effect a change in the lake. In actuality, the lake is well managed by a very active water quality control board who do things like importing salmon and trout for the fishermen and putting pressure on the real estate developers to not have their work crews dump trash into the water. Keep Tahoe Blue is a corporation that has been around for 50 years and was started to protest the expansion of the highway around the lake, they fundraise and print bumper stickers and oppose development. Interestingly, when I searched their website for the word ‘casino’, it seems the various Nevada casinos are major donors to the organization, despite being the targets of protests. Forgive me a cruel chuckle.  

UC Davis does most of the research on the lake, and it’s a great place for their grad students to do experiments and observations. My personal experience in Tahoe was that the place reeks overwhelmingly of weed. Not my cup of rotting skunk, thanks. They also have bears up there! I remember listening to an uber-wealthy former coworker of mine talk about how his vacation house had been ransacked by bears the previous weekend, they just broke down the door and trashed the place, ate all his flour and dry goods and stuff. 

So there you have it, the super wealthy, sky high in more ways than one, fighting bears and stickering their cars, getting fleeced by casinos, and tripping over phd candidates in ecology, on skis. That’s Tahoe. Have fun. Traffic is horrendous.
