It was so sad, but this footage provides a fascinating insight into tawny owl incubation and the possible reasons for their tragic loss. A LOOK BACK AT THEIR STORY It was a great surprise when Luna laid her eggs at the end of January, since this is early even for tawny owls and there was some speculation that this may spell trouble. THE TAWNY OWL INCUBATION But along the way, there were other signs that things weren’t quite right. During incubation, male tawny owls are supposed to provision their mates with food. But Bomber was inconsistent, on one occasion leaving Luna without food for a long day and night. This meant Luna had to leave her eggs alone in order to find food. COLD WEATHER As hatching time grew nearer, the weather took a sudden turn and temperatures plummeted. Even short 10 minute breaks Luna took away from the eggs to stretch her wings were risky. ONE CHICK BEGINS TO HATCH Tragically, one tawny owl chick did appear to begin the process of hatching. We noticed a crack in the egg and watched as Luna carefully turned it. You could even hear quiet cheeps coming from the chick inside. BUT THE CHICK DOESN'T MAKE IT But as the hours rolled on, there was no chick to be seen. It's likely the poor thing died of exhaustion during the hatching process. When Luna eventually stood up you could see just one egg left and a pile of broken eggshell. There was no sign of the chick. DID LUNA EAT THE CHICK? When I reviewed the footage from the nest camera, Luna did seem to be eating something. To reabsorb nutrients, adult birds will often eat the eggshells… and in this case the unhatched chick too. THE SECOND EGG MAY NOT HAVE BEEN FERTILISED For a brief moment, there was still hope for the second egg, but then Luna seemed restless and when she eventually left this egg, it was clear there was no life inside. THIS TRAGIC TAWNY OWL LOSS It was interesting to see how Bomber reacted when he discovered the eggs had not hatched. Listen to his calls and Luna's mournful response. WILL THESE TAWNY OWLS LAY AGAIN THIS YEAR? Tawny owls don’t usually have two attempts at nesting. But in some rare cases, after an early failed clutch, the pair will try again. So, it’s exciting to see them checking out another nest site a couple of days later.
