Here is an anatomically correct drawing of a rat skeleton. Over it, I’ve drawn a rat. Probably the most obvious thing to note here are the bones in the limbs, and how little of the limb segments show outside of the body. This is because a rat’s skin loosely sheathe the arms and legs. The rat’s arms and legs seem to join with the body at the elbows and knees, but as you can see with the skeleton, this isn’t the case. Although most of these bones/sections of leg don’t show outside the rat, they can still be used to realistically sketch and position your rat, as well as give you a good indication where you should bunch the skin and draw muscle bulges. Male rats have enormous testicles. Don’t be afraid to draw them, they’re hard to miss, realistically. latissimus dorsi spinotrapezius external oblique triceps brachii Similarly, although I’m displeased with the textbook drawing, you can also use a muscle chart to knowr where to showT the skin bunching and muscle bulges in a particularly short-haired or beefy rat. A rat’s nose, contrary to the understanding of many, is not similar to the nose of a cat or a rabbit. The most obvious structure of a rat’s nose is a pair of thick, C shaped curls of flesh that encircle the nostrils. On the front of each of these folds is a small bump of flesh. OoAer do>e-S-Vic^s My favorite way to sketch a rat’s nose is to drawT the nose as a flattened ball, draw a crosshair right through the middle, and then fill the bottom quarters with the C shaped nostril curls. I can use this spiral to flesh out the nostrils in the final draw\ A rat’s ears are not round! They overall shape is more ovoid or seed shaped than circular. The shape of a rat ear is pretty simple, think of an oval-shaped pepperoni with the bottom edges tucked in. A rat’s ear is typically level with the eye, and about three eye-lengths away from the eye itself. Position up or down on the rat’s skull varies from one individual to the next. <0p A rat’s front paws, like your hands, have four fingers and a thumb. Each of the toes, but not the thumb, has a claw\ Rats DO have pads, but they more like fleshy nubs than the footpads of a dog or a lion. A rat is capable of using its front feet for complex grabbing motions, commonly seen in eating and climbing. And yes, they can use their thumbs. A rat’s back feet are very different from the front. They are much longer, with longer toes, and all digits have clawrs. They are almost monkey-like in appearance, and they wralk on their heels. From above, a rat’s body is almost cylindrical, or even conical, with body width increasing from the nose to hips. There is only subtle narrowing at the muzzle, neck, waist and behind the front legs. On average, a rat’s tail is about the same length as its body, but this varies from rat to rat. An adult rat’s body is about 4 head lengths long, but this also varies; especially in very large or young rats. When sitting, rats look very hunched up. Their spines are very flexible, and can comfortably fold almost in half. This is a very typical posture of a rat that is feeling playful, grooming itself or eating. Arch the back more than you think you should, until their back almost looks like a corner. Too often, I see idiotic pictures of rats with dog or canine teeth. Rats are not canines, and although they eat meat at every opportunity, they are not carnivores. A rat’s diet mainly consists of seeds, nuts, and insects. They have two chisel-like teeth very close together at the front of their upper and lowrer jawTs. When their mouths are closed, the lowrer teeth are usually still visible. White teeth on a rat are abnormal, as their natural color is orange. Although they are hidden, and very tiny, rats DO have molars. They are close together in tight short rows as seen on the lovely skeleton at the top of this tutorial. A rat’s tongue is very thick and agile, and the surface is very smooth and shiny.
